Steel Diver Sub Wars (Japanese: スティールダイバー サブウォーズ), also known as Steel Diver Subwars[3] is a "3D action game" and a slow paced "tactical first person shooter" game with elements of exploration such as passing through rings.
It is the successor to Steel Diver.
Like Steel Diver, players controls a submarine but unlike Steel Diver, they can only see the environment from a first-person perspective. It is the second retail game in the Steel Diver series. It is distributed over the Nintendo 3DS's Nintendo eShop. It supports both multiplayer submarine wars with friends via local multiplayer and online multiplayer battles with anyone around the world.
Steel Diver Sub Wars is Nintendo's second free-to-play Nintendo 3DS game, however, not all aspects of the game are available for free. The game can be upgraded to a Premium Version for ¥952 in Japan[4], $10.55 in America and £8.99 in Europe[5]. The Premium Version features eighteen submarines and seven missions, instead of only two submarines and two missions. It also features access to the shipyard store, where five submarines all based on historical models can be purchased.

History[edit | edit source]
In Nintendo's E3 Analyst Briefing presentation, Nintendo suggested that a new free-to-play game was in development.[6] At E3 2013, Nintendo revealed to IGN that the franchise was Steel Diver.[7] Later, the Australian OFLC ratings board rated this Steel Diver game, and its name was revealed to be Steel Diver Sub Wars.
Even though Steel Diver Sub Wars was announced to be the first free-to-play game on Nintendo 3DS, the first one was actually a game called Darumeshi Sports Store (Japanese: だるめしスポーツ店), which was released in Japan on August 8, 2013. Steel Diver Sub Wars was released later on February 13th, 2014 in Japan, Europe and North America, following the game being officially revealed on Nintendo Direct on the same day.
As Darumeshi Sports Store will be localized outside of Japan as Rusty's Real Deal and is planned for release there in April 2014[8], this does give Steel Diver Sub Wars the distinction of Nintendo's first free-to-play game on the Nintendo 3DS outside of Japan.
